Starlings celebrate a special evening in Spitalfields
/Starling Arts had the privilege of being part of a very special event on Friday 6th November in the heart of Spitalfields Market. To mark the 50th anniversary of the incredible charity Spitalfields Crypt Trust (SCT) over 150 voices rang out in a flashmob and performances in the market - just in time for the weekend and a sponsored 'sleep in' at Christ Church Spitalfields to raise money for the charity's ongoing work supporting people recovering from addiction by helping them to get clean and sober, develop self-respect and hope for a much better future.
The evening started with a musical flashmob of the iconic song 'Lean On Me' with over 150 voices parading into the market, with the song ringing out all around the area! Performances by seven choirs followed, including three from the Starling Arts community. First up were the brilliant Voiceworks, the charity's own choir, who charmed and entertained the gathered audience, followed by the first Starling Arts choir of the evening, Forte, performing a reimagined version of the Monkees classic 'Daydream Believer' and modern feel-good anthem 'One Day Like This' - they had the audience whooping and cheering!
Next up were Starling's ladies choir Corvida with a beautiful and moving set from Ed Sheeran's 'Photograph' and 'Kiss Me' by Sixpence None the Richer. The beautiful singing of The Canary Wharf Choir, open to those living or working in Canary Wharf, came next - and their rendition of 'Hallelujah' was a highlight. The folk voices of Owl Parliament gave a particularly gorgeous take on Lionel Ritchie's 'All Night Long' with their glorious sound ringing out through the market stalls!
The penultimate set came from The Starling Singers who delivered a soulful twist on the disco classic 'Young Hearts Run Free' before the exhilarating James Bay hit 'Hold Back the River'. Last up were the incredibly powerful voices of Chaps Choir, comprised on the evening of over 30 singing men, appearing from the crowd. Their performance of 'Book Of Love' was both rousing and moving, the perfect cue to bring all the choirs back together for another round of 'Lean on Me' this time walking over to Christ Church to mark the start of the sleep in!
