Celebrating Singing for Wellbeing
As part of our Starling 10 anniversary festivities, we worked on projects and events that celebrated the power of group singing. Throughout 2019 and 2020, we brought over 150 people together to explore singing’s potential to forge extraordinary communities.
This work, generously supported by Arts Council England National Lottery Grants, reached a wide range of groups, including:
An accessible, intergenerational singing project engaging dementia patients in hospital and care settings, alongside young people from local schools
High-quality singing workshops for Starling Arts’ choirs, workplace choirs, and the wider community including the Flock Choir, a brand new singing group brought together for the occasion
A brand new song and music video recorded by many of these participants, as well as a mini-documentary highlighting how group singing enhances wellbeing for individuals and communities
Engagement included:
Skill-building rehearsals for members of Starling Arts' choirs, including within workplaces
Engaging workshops for the wider community formed of alumni members, the general public, plus friends and family
Uplifting intergenerational hospital workshops engaging patients and school children
Inspiring song recording offering a new experience for participants
Enlightening video engagement, featuring views, experiences and feedback via video for wide-reaching online content, creating a legacy of the project and our message through video, audio and images
We also carried out research and investigation into the impact of singing on wellbeing alongside clinical psychologist Dr. Claire Scanlan, including producing guidelines for best practice, shared with choir leaders around the world. Check out the guidelines by clicking on the button below.
